Michael Joseph Books 21st March 2019
On a hot July night in 1983, six school friends go camping in the forest. Bright and brilliant, they are destined for great things, and young Aurora Jackson is dazzled to be allowed to tag along.
Thirty years later, a body is discovered. DCI Sheens is called to the scene, but he already knows what’s waiting for him: Aurora Jackson, found at long last.
But that’s not all. The friends have all maintained their innocent, but the body is found in a hideaway only the six of them know about.
It seems the killer has always lurked very close to home…
Firstly huge thanks to Jenny Platt for arranging this blog tour, inviting me to be involved and providing me with a copy of the book. I am delighted to be kicking off the blog tour today for She Lies in Wait, the debut novel by Gytha Lodge, out later this month on March 21st.
Following a rather slow reading month in February this meaty crime fiction was exactly what I needed to kick start my March reading. Aurora is 14 years old when she goes on a camping trip with her sister Topaz and her friends, all older, cooler and more daring than Aurora, she feels staid and alone. Abandoned by her sister, who prefers the company of her friends, Aurora is vulnerable, although no one can quite anticipate exactly how vulnerable.
Thirty years later we meet DCI Jonah Sheens, a rookie at the time of the missing investigation and a local who remembers it well, but hiding some secrets of his own. Accompanied by new detective Juliette Hanson, eager to impress but with a tenacious manner and strong professional integrity, DCI Sheens discovers, to his peril, nothing stays secret forever. Keen now to discover the truth and justice for Aurora, we follow DCI Sheens as he leads his team in the investigation into the girl’s death.
Told in the third person narrative the book follows the investigation but interspersed chapters tell Aurora’s final hours on that fateful camping trip. This style of writing worked incredibly well as it gave the reader the opportunity to meet the main characters – the other 6 friends on the camping trip, then and now.
This was a very decent piece of crime fiction, the chapters were short, the writing engaging and crucially I didn’t work it out! As the cover says, ‘Six Friends, One Killer, Who do you trust?’ And it was really difficult to predict the outcome, as along with DCI Jonah Sheens I had different key suspects as the investigation progressed. That said this book concluded tidily with the mystery solved which is essential in crime stories right? A great crime debut recommended by me!
