‘You Have One Hour To Live’
Those are the only words spoken on the phone call. Then, they hang up. A prank, surely? A mistake? Anything but the chilling truth… that someone is watching, waiting, working to take your life in one hour.
The job of finding out falls to DI Helen Grace: a woman with a track record in hunting killers. However, this is a case where the killer seems as always to be one step ahead of the police and the victims. With no motive, no leads, no clues – nothin but pure fear – an hour can last a lifetime…
I have been a fan of DI Helen Grace since the start, a formidable detective with a complex backstory combined with authentic, but strong plots. What is there not to like? So when this blog tour landed in my inbox I leapt at the chance. But a confession, I read book seven and wondered if this series was coming to an end. I completely missed book 8 – didn’t even know about it! And here we are at book 9, and I can say now I was wrong – this series is still going strong, this was a mighty piece of crime fiction that had me hooked from the very first page, a series yes but perfectly fine to read as a standalone if like me you’ve missed a book or two…
Set in Southampton, for those unfamiliar DI Grace heads up the Major Incident Team, she is a well developed character and for that reason, as with any series it is worth starting at the beginning, but as I said previously, not essential. The plot in this book is strong and that is true for the series and the author’s background writing for television in crime dramas is evident.
With a chilling start, the notion of an hour left to live generated conversation in my household as we reflected how little you could actually do in an hour. Justin Lanning is murdered, leaving his partner to report the mysterious phone call and DI Grace and her team to investigate this brutal crime. An absolute page turner, the crime victim has an interesting past and the storyline had me gripped as I accompanied the Major Incident Team in seeking to solve the crime. I didn’t work it out but I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and I was left impressed with the detail of the plot and the authenticity of the story.
It’s difficult to say too much more without spoilers but if you are a fan of crime fiction then definitely pick this one up, if you are a fan of DI Helen Grace then definitely pick this up and if you are thinking about crime fiction then, pick up this book or this series and welcome to the world of DI Helen Grace!
