My Thoughts
Thank you to Tracey at Compulsive Readers and the publishers for the proof copy of Cat & Mouse. I’ve been a fan of the DI Helen Grace series from the start. Read my reviews of All Fall Down, Love Me Not, Truth or Dare and Hide and Seek.
In the latest instalment of the series featuring maverick Detective Helen Grace, a killer is at large in Southampton, viciously attacking seemingly random victims who are home alone. Targeting affluent families, prominent on social media, tenuous threads link them but there is not a lot to go on for DI Grace and the Murder Investigation Team. Doggedly pursuing leads while the city lives in fear stirred up by the now familiar ruthless crime writer Emilia Garanita. Readers will enjoy slipping back into the company of the MIT team with some now, very familiar characters and there is a lot to like about the latest instalment in this crime fiction series.
MJ Arlidge knows how to write great crime fiction, striking a perfect balance between gruesome detail, police procedures and investigation. Keeping the reader guessing throughout this book which was twisty and gripping in equal measure.
As a crime fiction novel this was good, however there were a number of threads that in order to understand require reading the series – for me this is a must anyway, and while I think this could be enjoyed as a strong piece of crime fiction I think much would be lost if read as a standalone.
As a character, Helen Grace is a fearless and strong leader, never popular with those above but loyal to her team and never afraid to get her hands dirty on the job. I do wonder how much further she can go – she has been through a lot and while some of her stories now seem a little far fetched and a long way from where she started, contradictingly to me she still feels very authentic.
A great crime thriller, possibly a tad long but an enjoyable and gripping read none the less. Crime fiction fans and fans of this series will not be disappointed. Cat & Mouse is available to buy now.
