Book Description

Midnight Jones is trained to understand the human mind. But everything changes when in the course of her work, she discovers Profile K’s file – because K stands for killer, and she knows that someone more dangerous than she ever imagined walks among them.

Midnight knows what Profile K is capable of before he even commits his first crime. But as the news rolls with the brutal murder of a local woman, non one believes what she tells them: that he is capable of so much more.

Profile K will kill again – and, terrifyingly, Midnight realises that the moment she found his file was the moment she became the next target. Because Profile K is coming for Midnight – and the only way to escape with her life is to find him before he finds her…

My Thoughts

Thank you so much to the team at Avon Books for sending me this proof copy of Profile K. I have been a fan of Helen Fields since the very first Luc Callanach novel. Sadly some of these books came before this blog, but you can read my reviews of The Institution and The Last Girl to Die and if you are a fan of crime fiction I would urge you to check out this author.

I was ever so slightly cautious about this book, flicking through reviews referencing the organisation made me wonder if it would be too futuristic for me, I need not have worried. Profile K is nothing short of brilliant, Midnight Jones is a talented analyst working for a forward thinking company that does pre employment and study assessments. In the course of her work she comes across Profile K, a terrifying individual who is unmoved by the testing, revealing a dark and deeply disturbed mind. Having her concerns dismissed by her employers, the storyline becomes increasingly sinister, with Midnight Jones in a murderous game of Cat and Mouse with the person known just as Profile K.

Midnight Jones is an engaging character, a carer for her disabled twin sister who is the centre of her life. Juggling her job with her caring responsibilities leaves little time for much else. Work is relentless, with targets and a stringent routine, but Midnight cannot get Profile K off her mind and despite being told to forget it, she cannot. A murder happens and Midnight knows this is the work of Profile K, then another…

Just telling you this much… this book sounds so good doesn’t it? And it really is, an absolutely compelling crime thriller. Fields is a superb crime writer and I have always admired her willingness to detail the gruesomeness of brutal murders. This book is no exception, when writing crime fiction the gore is, I think unavoidable.

A cameo by Dr Connie Woolwine was pleasing, I always admire authors who link their work just through the odd character. The plot is excellent, scarily plausible and well executed. This is a fast paged thriller that really does keep the reader engrossed. Some sweet relationships added to the story and complemented the ruthlessness of Midnight’s employers.

Helen Fields never disappoints, she has created a terrific crime series and several standalone books in the crime genre. An auto buy author guaranteed to thrill. Thank you again to the publisher for gifting me this book.

Thanks as always for reading.
